Te Kākano o Murihiku
Murihiku, Southland
The project has been conducted between Te Tapu o Tāne, Te Wharekura o Arowhenua and YMCA. The focus of this kaupapa is based on Mahinga kai (cultural harvest) and taoka species – to increase matauraka (intergenerational passing of knowledge) and connection to te taiao (our natural world).
Year 1 Pilot is focused on establishing foundational knowledge that can be shared for future years to come and also provide potential pathways to employment. This is a Tamariki and Rangatahi Program that was originally started in partnership with Te Wharekura o Arowhenua.
The program aims to connect tamariki and rangatahi to te taiao. We do this in several ways, from seed collecting, plant identification, sowing and growing in our nursery and eventually going out onto the whenua and planting. Eventually, this program will also aim to deliver capability training and build foundational learning skills that can be used and adapted across a wide range of industries.
